The Banana Sharks Robotics team had a zoom call today with Heather Beem. Dr. Beem holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is the founder of the Practical Education Network.
While studying at MIT, Dr. Beem designed a sensor that could be used by underwater robots to collect data on hydrothermal events or marine life. The sensor was inspired by seal whiskers. She is currently a college professor teaching in Africa.
The Banana Sharks found her research online and it inspired them to use the technology on submarines to detect ghost nets. They will present their research at the South Dakota State Robotics Competition on March 8.
Today's zoom call to Africa gave them a chance to ask questions and share what they had learned.
