Third Grade Happenings

SOCIAL STUDIES: We will be wrapping up our government units. The students will start learning about Communities and start working on a Native American Unit.
SCIENCE: We finished up our unit on the water cycle and have moved on to weather. Continue to stress to your children when reading non-fiction they need to read and reread to check for understanding!! We will more than likely have the test on weather during the week of MEA. Thanks for reviewing and studying with your children at home!!
MATH: Sum Dog Math cards were handed out. There are different contests your child may enter on this site. Your child may also use the IXL and Study Island websites. These are all great resources for extra practice at home!
We have started our Mad Minutes! Your child has 90 seconds to complete thirty addition problems. We are working to move on to subtraction soon!
We will also be finishing up money and moving on to adding and subtracting whole numbers.
READING: Currently we are reading Sarah, Plain and Tall. During this unit we are focusing on setting, character traits, inferencing, and comparing and contrasting. We’ve also been discussing the historical fiction genre. After this book, we will be starting a Patricia Polacco unit and will spend time learning about themes in stories. The students have been busy taking many AR tests!! I hope you’ve been able to get on the website easily to monitor their progress! Remember they need to meet their goal by October 17!
WRITING: We just finished the six traits lessons on ideas and will now be moving on to organization. They’ve been doing very well!! We also studied persuasive writing. Parents…beware! Some are going to try to use these skills on you when asking for certain Christmas presents! This month we will also review friendly letters and hopefully begin personal narratives.
ENGLISH/SPELLING: During the month of October the third graders will be finishing nouns, and begin to work with verbs. We will also try to do some review of what we have been learning throughout the year.
Thank you for working on spelling words at home with your child. A new list for the next five weeks was sent home.
